APAARI is supporting the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP) in undertaking analysis of data and documents related to agriculture and rural statistics in FAO member countries in Asia and the Pacific to draft a Sectoral Review of Agriculture and Rural Statistics in Asia and the Pacific. This includes analysis of data from various sources, including the following:

  • the global database on SDG indicators maintained by the UN Statistics Division (UNSD) in New York
  • FAO’s SDG platform and database
  • FAO country questionnaires for the Statistical Capacity Assessment of the relevant SDG indicators
  • strategic national documents, e.g. in-depth country assessment documents, strategic plans for agriculture and rural statistics, and other strategic national planning documents.

Included in this review will be a synthesis on the statistical capacity assessment of Asia-Pacific countries including their ability and needs in producing priority SDG indicators under FAO custodianship. An expert meeting will be organized for Asia-Pacific countries during the Asia-Pacific Commission on Agricultural Statistics (APCAS28) in 2020 to present findings and obtain recommendations to refine the report. The report will inform discussions at the 35th session of the Asia-Pacific Regional Conference to be convened in Bhutan in April 2020.

In collaboration with the FAO Regional Statistician for Asia-Pacific, APAARI is leading the production of (data) analysis to draft a synthesis on statistical capacity assessment of the region’s countries, including compilation of a draft paper and presentation for consultation with FAO and national officials. It will organize the expert meeting, solicit feedback and finalize the Sectoral Review paper.
