Sweetpotato Germplasm Collection

Sweetpotato is one of the major crops of Indonesia and the country also harbors a large part of Asian sweetpotato genetic diversity. During the past decade the International Potato Center with financial support from the Swiss Government, has been working with Indonesian institutions to collect, conserve and document sweetpotato genetic resources both for long-term maintenance of biodiversity and to help Indonesian farmers improve their production and use of this crop.

This CD-ROM contains a catalog of passport, morphological, photographic and agronomic evaluation data of 1522 sweetpotato accessions. It also presents indigenous knowledge of a large number of these accessions, farmers’ indigenous knowledge of the crop and its cultivation, summary information on the crop’s biology and genetics and full supporting texts of 15 scientific articles about sweetpotato and sweetpotato farming.

Databases by The International Coconut Genetic Resources Network (COGENT)

Coconut Genetic Resources Database – CGRD
In the CGRD data about coconut cultivars are divided in two main parts: passport data and priority characterization, and evaluation data. It takes into account the IPGRI descriptors of the coconut palms and the methods detailed in the STANTECH Manual. The data the CGRD contains passport and characterization data of 1316 accessions conserved in 25 sites in 18 countries. The CGRD project was initiated in 1994. The project is funded by the French Government and implemented by the Centre de Cooporation Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Developpment (CIRAD) in collaboration with COGENT member countries. The software CGRD is upgraded periodically. Its objective is to facilitate data storage and exchange among the members of the COGENT network. This will enable coconut breeders to access the latest data on coconut cultivars.

Coconut Literature Infobase (ready by 2002)
The Infobase project identifies, sources, documents and disseminates publications and information on completed and ongoing researches in national, regional and global programmes from member countries, partner institutions and donors. The CLI includes lists of bibliography on coconut from the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC) and the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). To date, there are about 400 coconut-related materials (books/articles/COGENT publications). Requests are sent out regularly to the COGENT member countries for coconut literature and publication such as annual reports, published and unpublished articles on coconut, books, newsletters and journals.

Farmers’ Varieties & Multipurpose Uses Database (ready by 2002)
The objective of the database is to identify farmers’ knowledge and descriptions of coconut varieties being grown in COGENT member countries and to document the multipurpose uses of the coconut. Coconut researchers, country coordinators, project leaders, donors, and the general public will be able to access the information on the uses of different coconut varieties from anywhere in the world. To date, data on 104 varieties from 13 countries (Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tonga, Vanuatu and Vietnam) have been incorporated into the database. Interesting information in the database will also be featured in the COGENT Newsletter and in the IPGRI-APO Newsletter.
