  • Number of Hungry People Soars
    The U.S. Agriculture Department said the number of hungry people in 70 poor nations soared 10.8% last year and will climb at least 1.7% this year, and perhaps much more depending on how the global recession plays out. The annual USDA survey, which attempts to calculate how many people are consuming less than 2,100 calories a day in countries that do or did receive food aid, is ammunition for the Obama administration in its push to help poor nations feed themselves.     A Zimbabwean Catholic priest has told CAFOD that despite supermarket shelves heaving with food imported from South Africa, the majority of Zimbabweans are still in need of food and basic medicines, as the country remains gripped in the worst humanitarian crisis since independence. Battered by years of political and economic upheaval the country's economy is in shreds.   • Commander Naeem among 13 terrorists killed in Swat, Dir operation: ISPR
    As many as 13 terrorists including commander Naeemullah were killed and 24 were apprehended along with lot of arms, ammunition and equipment (..). The World Food Programme has started its operation in Bajaur from 30 June, 2009. Food distributions hub at Abbottabad has been established and has started delivery food items to 655 registered IDP families out of 872. The World Food Programme (WFP) is setting up its ?Food Hub? at Buner and will start functioning by 4 July. It will deliver rations to approx 3000 returning families for 6 months.
