■ New Technologies and Research Outputs
At JIRCAS, our research extends beyond the major cereal crops to include minor cereals and other grass crops. In this issue, we introduce our research results focusing on these lesser-known crops, which are featured in the JIRCAS Research Highlights 2022.
- Phosphate rock-enriched compost with rhizosphere soil increases sorghum yield equivalently to chemical fertilizers
Soils in sub-Saharan Africa are deficient in phosphorus, which is necessary for crop growth.
Combining sorghum crop residues with phosphate ore and soil to make compost produced the same yield increase as conventional chemical fertilizers.
- Intergeneric hybrid between sugarcane and Erianthus exhibits superior nitrogen use efficiency than sugarcane
Erianthus, a close relative of sugarcane, can be effectively crossed with sugarcane. The resulting hybrids have deeper root systems and have a greater capacity to absorb more nitrogen nitrogen absorption due to their deeper roots. It is hoped that this hybrid will lead to the development of sugarcane varieties with deeper roots and consequently higher yields.
