International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste – 29 September 2025
As the world marks the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW), one paradox is impossible to ignore: in Asia-Pacific, 390 million people go hungry, while food worth nearly USD 1 trillion is wasted each year.
“Food loss and waste is a critical challenge for food security and sustainable development, given Asia-Pacific’s significant share and economic costs,” said Dr. Ravi Khetarpal, Executive Director of the Asia-Pacific Association of Agricultural Research Institutions (APAARI).
Food loss starts on farms — from unpredictable weather and pests to weak storage and distribution systems — and continues through markets and households. Over-ordering, overstocking, and confusion over “best-before” labels add to the waste.
Some countries are taking action. Japan recycles food waste into fertilizer, animal feed, and bioenergy. China’s “Clean Your Plate” campaign encourages diners to order responsibly. Singapore, India, Bangladesh, and Nepal are expanding recycling infrastructure and awareness programs.
Still, gaps remain, especially in data collection and coordinated policies. Experts say real change will require prevention, redistribution, climate-smart farming, and consumer awareness — all working together to turn waste into resilience.
